The big red Cambion (half-demon) has had quite a rough time when it comes to his silver screen and video game portrayals. While I liked the Guillermo del Toro-directed movies (2004’s Hellboy and 2008’s Hellboy II: The Golden Army) that starred Ron Perlman, I would like to wipe memories of the 2019 reboot starring David Harbour from my mind.
However, not much can really be said about Hellboy’s video game presence because other than appearing as a guest character in Injustice 2, I never knew there were two games–Dogs of Night and The Science of Evil–that starred this beloved comic book hero. Although, both games did not exactly receive very high praise from critics or fans.
Things might be turning around for Hellboy though as indie developer Upstream Arcade (West of Dead and Deadbeat Heroes) and publisher Good Shepherd Entertainment (Showgunners, Hard West series and John Wick Hex) might just have found the perfect formula for the titular hero with the upcoming Hellboy Web of Wyrd, which is expected to release on October 4, 2023.
This roguelike action-brawler features an original storyline and unique key art by series creator Mike Mignola himself. On top of that, it also features the voice talents of the late, great Lance Reddick as Hellboy. Personally, I think the cel-shaded art style looks great as it mimics the look of the comic it is based on and gives it its own unique style.
In terms of its story, Hellboy Web of Wyrd sees Hellboy and a team of Bureau for Paranormal Research and Defense (B.P.R.D) agents having to investigate the disappearance of a missing agent who went on a mission to the mysterious Butterfly House. As Hellboy, you will have to go through a gateway into The Wyrd: a place that is filled with brutal enemies, animated statues and almost unbeatable monsters that you will have to fend off using hard-hitting melee and ranged attacks.
Hellboy Web of Wyrd will be available for the PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch.
