LG refreshes its gram laptop lineup

Shedding millimetres and grams

by Justin Choo

LG’s signature laptop series gets a new lick of paint for 2023. It’s odd that a company that’s better known for household appliances has such an iconic laptop lineup but it just means that they get what people want in a portable device.

LG gram Ultraslim

The headliner, the LG gram Ultraslim (15Z90RT), is the thinnest gram from LG. The weight still hangs around 1kg (998g to be exact) but the device now measures 11mm (10.99 mm to be exact) when closed. Furthermore, this is a 15.6″ laptop with an OLED display. Understandably you are not going to defy the law of physics and the Ultraslim uses the new 13th Gen Intel Raptor Lake P-core processors designed (at least it’s not the lower-powered U-series I guess), for the slim and light category. Having this in a 15″ form factor is a big boon for people who need a larger laptop on the move, though it remains to be seen if the 60Wh battery will be enough.

LG gram Style

The 16- and 14-inch LG gram Style laptops(16Z90RS and 14Z90RS) feature an elegant, colour-shifting glass design that varies according to the lighting and viewing angle. The haptic touchpad is also hidden and reveals itself through soft LED backlighting activated by touch. Each has a 16:10, OLED Anti-Glare Low Reflection display with a high refresh rate, and features an Intel 13th Gen Raptor Lake P-Core CPU and a Gen4 NVMe SSD.

The regular 17, 16, 15 and 14 models (17Z90R, 16Z90R, 15Z90R and 14Z90R respectively) have also been refreshed. They aren’t as lightweight as the headline act (weighing less than 1.45kg) but they make up for it with a longer battery life–notably for the 17″ and 16″ models, which pack a 90Wh battery, which LG says enables more than 20 hours of video playback on a single charge.

The latest 17- and 16-inch grams are also equipped with an NVIDIA GeForce RTX 3050 4GB GPU along with a P-Core Intel CPU (13th gen) and a Gen4 NVMe SSD. The GPU also enables Variable Refresh Rate (VRR) for tear-free graphics while gaming (but, not like you’re buying this for games).

All models in the regular range also get an anti-glare IPS display, making it suitable for outdoor use, as well as Dolby Atmos speakers–which is now standard for all gram models–for a more pleasant audio experience.

2-in-1 and +view

The new 2-in-1 is available in 16″ and 14″ form factors (16T90R and 14T90R respectively) and comes pre-installed with notetaking and drawing applications optimised for the LG Stylus Pen (Wacom AES 2.0). The +view portable monitor (16MR70) now sports dual USB Type-C ports, so you can connect two devices simultaneously and enjoy the convenience of two-way power delivery.

As with all CES announcements, prices and availability will be finalised at a later date.
