The alchemy of tech lifestyle
Potions is an independent Singapore-based editorial site covering technology, gadgets, games, digital culture, entertainment and the occasional eye-catching oddity.
Potions may sound like cutting-edge, medieval tech in fantasy lore, but good tools are timeless: they solve problems, make life easier, and occasionally make us wonder why nobody thought of them sooner.
We write for readers who like clever technology in all its forms, whether it comes in the shape of a smartphone, a gaming handheld, a pair of headphones, an app, a show, a card game, or some oddly specific gadget that fixes niggling problems in your life.
What we cover
Potions covers news, reviews, guides, features and commentary across consumer technology, gaming, entertainment and lifestyle-adjacent tech.
News
Timely updates on tech, gaming, entertainment and digital culture.
Reviews
Practical takes on products, services and experiences that matter.
Guides
Helpful explainers and how-tos to help readers get more from their tech.
Features
Deeper dives into trends, people, products and the bigger picture.
Culture
Stories on habits, hobbies and oddities shaping how we live with tech.
Our opinions are editorially independent and our goal is to separate hype from substance. We’re playful and enthusiastic, but our priority is to deliver useful insights.
Our editorial approach
We believe good tech writing should be clear, practical and honest.
Explain products and trends without drowning readers in jargon
Highlight real-world use cases instead of repeating spec sheets
Ground product claims in facts and real-world context
Flag caveats that will shape the user experience
Give readers enough context to make up their own minds
Where relevant, we also disclose review units, media access, brand-provided information or commercial relationships that may be relevant to a story.
The editorial team
Old hands, odd obsessions and enough experience to know when something sounds too good to be true.

Justin Choo
Justin lives for gadgets, even if there is not a circuit board inside. From pool cues to playing card paper stock, there is very little detail he will not obsess over.
The self-professed master of useless information spent almost 20 years writing about technology, gadgets, games and lifestyle topics for titles such as PC Magazine, Gadget3, T3, Stuff and NXT, among others.
He has also covered non-tech subjects for Spirited Singapore, Active Age and Robb Report Singapore, which explains why he sidetracks every conversation into rabbit holes.

Oo Gin Lee
As an ex-editor of the national paper Digital Life, Gin Lee is more than qualified to boss the editor around. But he has more pressing things to do with the little free time he already has, like putting his already underutilised gaming machines to good use.
Gin Lee’s unique wealth of experience in journalism and law gives him an edge in cutting through tech fluff, bypassing marketing noise to reveal the real-world repercussions of new tech long before they happen. But one more game first…

'Uncle Influencer'
Despite our best efforts, our mysterious contributor, 'Uncle Influencer', insists on staying in the shadows. A seasoned journalist and media hand, he brings a practical, time-starved, adult-in-the-room perspective to technology and lifestyle topics, while fueled by teenage irritation energy.
He still loves his tech toys, but a life of parenting, furparenting, and work leaves him with little patience for excess, fluff or pointless complication. Turns out 'Mr Reality Check' works as a moniker too.
