Between the HUAWEI P50 Pocket and the P50 Pro, the Pocket might be the head-turner, but the P50 Pro is perhaps the most viable version.
The P50 Pocket will likely cost more than $2,000 while the P50 Pro is tagged at $1,548. But it’s not just a matter of price; the folding feature is spectacular but it’s not for everybody.
Like the P50 Pocket, the P50 Pro is also somewhat of a looker. It boasts a slim body designed for comfort, measuring just 8.5mm thick and weighing 195 grams. It also features IP68 water and dust resistance.
As befitting a top-tier phone, the P50 Pro packs a large display and battery: a 6.6″ OLED panel with 120Hz refresh rate and 300Hz touch sampling rate for smooth animations and gameplay, while the 4,360mAh battery is adequately large and supports 66W fast charging and 50W fast wireless charging.
The main selling point of the P50 Pro is the top-of-the-line, Dual-Matrix camera system featuring all-new computational imaging tech in the form of XD Optics, XD Fusion Pro Image Engine and True-Chroma Image Engine. XD Optics enables the smartphone to rectify optical errors and reproduce fine details; XD Fusion Pro Image Engine improves detail, colour and dynamic range while True-Chroma Image Engine fine-tunes colour accuracy to closer reflect what we see with our own eyes.
As a result, the P50 Pro can deliver usable images even at 200x zoom range. The camera system can also support 4K video across the range with AIS Pro image stabilisation.
The only major elephant in the room is that for its flagship status, it’s only equipped with a Snapdragon 888 4G processor – no 5G support. While it’s true that 5G isn’t really necessary for most people, it’s good to have a future-proof option if you only intend to replace your phone in three years or so. but that brings us to one big upside – Huawei is actually offering a 2-year warranty if you buy the HUAWEI P50 Pro. You’ll also be entitled to dedicated after-sales service (terms & conditions apply). This includes:
- One year door-to-door repair pickup and delivery service
- VIP hotline for technical assistance
- One-time screen replacement within first 3-months of purchase
On a more immediate note; if you’re worried about app availability, Huawei’s AppGallery has a decent selection of apps now and offers the most popular and local apps as well such as ComfortDelGro, TADA, Grab, RYDE, TraceTogether, Singpass, OneMap, and many more.
