Hollow Knight receives voice-acting via passionate fans

The Hallownest Vocalized mod sparks new life to this five-year-old game.

When it was released back in 2017, Team Cherry’s Hollow Knight received high praise from critics and gamers due to how polished the game was especially since this was the very first game produced by the indie developer. So while many of its fans are waiting with bated breath for the official announcement and release of the sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, fans of the first game who are still playing it can experience it in a new light with the Hallownest Vocalized mod.

Voice-acting was not available in the original version probably due to the limited budget the studio had but that has been remedied by over 100 passionate fans who banded together to provide voice-acting to the entirety of Hollow Knight. Other than just NPC dialogue, this dedicated team even went and voiced every text available in the game. According to the mod’s release trailer, the team has voiced 35 spirits, 45 lore tablets, 42 bosses, 48 NPCs, 89 corpses, 105 item descriptions, 168 journal entries, and 218 enemies.

Seeing as this is a pretty extensive mod, it is sadly only available to those who play the game on PC. To install this mod, you can follow these instructions shared by the team:

  • Own a legitimate PC version of Hollow Knight.
    • The mod won’t work on pirated versions.
  • Download the Scarab Mod Launcher (leads to the mod’s Github).
    • Detailed walkthrough of how to use the Scarab Launcher & Guide to Modding Hollow Knight by Fireb0rn (you only need to watch up to the 6:33 mark)
  • Upon opening the Scarab Launcher, use the search function to find “Hallownest Vocalized”, and click Install.

And that is all you have to do to play Hollow Knight with voice-acting.
