Google Pixel Watch 5 gets smarter by borrowing from the rest of Google

New colours aside, the Pixel Watch 5 is almost indistinguishable from last year’s Pixel Watch 4. It costs SGD 40 more at launch for the 41mm model, but it does come with 3GB of RAM and 64GB of storage.

Having done most of the heavy hardware lifting last year, Google has kept things largely unchanged, outwardly at least. Even the brightness of the screen is the same — a 3,000-nit Actua 360 display — right down to the rated battery life of 30 to 40 hours.

This year, the cleverer stuff comes from Google’s underlying speciality — its services. Pixel Watch 5 uses Google Maps’ 3D building models and Google’s positioning infrastructure to improve GPS tracks. Health Guardian uses models trained on large volumes of wearable data to identify long-term health trends. And Gemini pulls context from Google services and surfaces it on the watch face.

Pixel Watch 5 uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated platform featuring Google’s dual-chip architecture. Google claims 12% more CPU performance and a 20% overall performance increase. The watch runs Wear OS 7 and features Bluetooth 6.0, UWB, IP68 protection and 5ATM water resistance.

While Dual-frequency GPS is not new to Pixel Watch, Pixel Watch 5 features urban modelling to improve accuracy.

Tall buildings can bounce GPS signals around before they reach a watch, resulting in routes that wander across roads or apparently pass through buildings. Pixel Watch 5 uses 3D building models from Maps to account for those reflections, alongside Google’s network of reference stations for correcting atmospheric and satellite errors.

To do this, the watch compresses its raw GPS data and sends it to Google’s servers for correction rather than burning through battery doing everything locally.

Google claims that this method doubles the route accuracy of previous Pixel Watches in difficult environments.

Improved accuracy in making ‘predictions’

Health Guardian follows a similar approach, though many of its features are not exclusive to the Pixel Watch 5. Google says compatible Pixel Watches and Fitbit Air will also receive parts of the platform.

New features include Blood Pressure Trends and Insulin Resistance Trends, which Google calls a first-of-its-kind feature on Pixel and Fitbit wearables — both slated for availability in Singapore this autumn.

Blood Pressure Trends analyses pulse and movement patterns over time to detect persistent changes relative to a user’s baseline.

Insulin Resistance Trends uses several weeks of physiological data to detect changes in metabolic health without requiring a blood draw. Google says the underlying sensor foundation model was pretrained on more than one trillion minutes of data from five million opted-in users and validated against clinical blood tests.

The Pixel Watch 5 is also the first and only smartwatch to call emergency services and transmit your GPS location if you stop breathing. Designed to spot severe pneumonia, choking and accidental drug toxicity, Breathing Emergency Detection combines the PPG sensor, accelerometer, and barometer with on-device AI to detect a persistent, critical drop in oxygen saturation. However, it is currently limited to selected European markets.

While Health Guardian works largely passively, the forthcoming Strength Training mode takes a more active role, walking users through sets and rest periods, with weights and repetitions logged from the wrist. Routines can be built in Google Health, while Google Health Coach can generate programmes around a user’s goals, adjusting recommendations based on recovery data, such as sleep and heart rate variability.

However, the personalised coaching service requires Google Health Premium. Eligible Pixel 11 Pro, Pro XL and Pro Fold buyers get six months of Health Premium through their included Google AI Pro trial, subject to the offer terms.

Google also claims 15% higher sleep-stage accuracy, meaning the watch is better at determining which sleep stage the user is in.  This helps new features like Smart Wake, which monitors your heart rate and body movements during the 30 minutes leading up to your alarm. If you shift into the light sleep phase, it begins with gentle, escalating vibrations.

The cleverest parts are increasingly never the hardware

Watch 4 introduced Raise to Talk: lift your wrist and speak to Gemini. Watch 5 can now handle some basic actions locally, reducing latency and allowing simple tasks such as starting a workout or setting a timer to work offline.

Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions gathers context from incoming messages and surface useful information from supported services like Google Calendar or Gmail before you even ask. For example, if someone asks about a dinner meetup, Gemini will display the calendar details on your watch screen, allowing you to reply with a quick double-pinch.

At a Glance follows the same idea, with information such as boarding passes or the number of stops remaining on a commute appearing when relevant.

The Pixel Watch 5 itself is a fairly modest piece of new hardware. What makes it more interesting is how much of Google can now fit behind it.

Prices start at SGD 569 for the 41mm model and SGD 599 for the 45mm model, with pre-orders now open and retail availability from 20 August through Singtel, StarHub, Shopee, Lazada, Harvey Norman, Best Denki, Courts, and Metapod. Google Store credit of SGD 120 for the 41mm model or SGD 150 for the 45mm model runs through 4 September 2026.

Pixel Tag places Find Hub on your wrist

Google is also adding its first Pixel Tag to the ecosystem. The stainless-steel tracker is IP67-rated and uses a replaceable battery rated for up to a year.

It uses a combination of Ultra-Wideband (UWB) technology, Bluetooth Channel Sounding, and the expansive Find My Device network to track devices. A tag can be shared with up to 10 people and supports Left Behind alerts. You will also be warned when an unknown tracking tag appears to be travelling with you.

Setup uses Fast Pair with a compatible Android 9-or-newer device; Google specifies Bluetooth 6.0 or newer. Nearby finding uses Ultra-Wideband with Bluetooth Channel Sounding for compatible devices, while objects further away can be located through Find Hub’s crowdsourced network of more than one billion Android devices.

Pixel Watch supports Find Hub, so you can even ask Gemini off the cuff (literally) to ping it.
