What’s streaming this February: Nope, no romantic theme this month

Just your usual fare of safe bets and off-the-wall recommendations.

And just like that, we’re into the second month of the new year. Sadly, the list of shows that we haven’t gotten down to watch will continue to pile up, and here are a couple more to (potentially) add to that list.

Record of Ragnarok Season 2

To stop the gods from destroying all of humanity, a valkyrie convinces the gods to take on humanity’s best in one-on-one battles to decide if they are worthy to continue living. The valkyries lend the humans their strength and it turns out the battles aren’t as one-sided as we think. Sounds good? But wait! This is a B-grade manga made into a subpar anime. This is a train wreck that smells and tastes of pure guilty pleasure–oodles of senseless posturing, unnecessary fan service and drawn-out boss battles and cop-out wins. It’s so awful that it’s worth a watch.

Star Trek: Picard

Depending on whom you ask I suppose, but it’s safe to say that the first two seasons of Picard evoked negative feelings more often than not. However, those dissenting voices on the interwebs are seemingly positive about the third and allegedly final season, which sounds like a good thing in this context. Will Picard’s (Patrick Stewart) standalone series get a season to remember? For one, we’ll be seeing the return of some familiar faces: Worf (Michael Dorn), Geordi LaForge (LeVar Burton), and Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) will reunite with the good captain.

You Season 4

Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) is a serial stalker and killer who’s also looking for love–the perfect recipe for an intriguing show. That also means he has double the emotional baggage, not helped by the events at the end of season 3. Season 4 picks up with Goldberg moving to London and starting over as a college professor. This time around, it’s as they say, ‘how the turntables.’ Goldberg gets a stalker of his own, and ironically, someone he can relate to.

Somebody I used to Know

Real-life couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie collaborate for the fourth time with an old-school rom-com starring Brie as the workaholic Ally, who runs into her old flame Sean (Jay Ellis) and the sparks are reignited. However, she learns that Sean is set to marry Cassidy (Kiersey Clemons) and her world starts to swirl into a meltdown. Making things more complicated is the fact that Ally finds herself becoming fast friends with Cassidy, who reminds Ally of her past self.

Hello Tomorrow

Apple indulges in a little future-retroism with Hello Tomorrow. This little sci-fi dramedy looks like the 50s is living out its quirky portrayal of the future, complete with space travel. In this world, Jack (Billy Cudrup) comes across as an earnest salesman selling a timeshare dream of living on the moon. It all seems too good to be true, and before long, people start to get suspicious about the entire operation, including his own staff–is this all an elaborate scam? Will there be aliens?
